Curator’s Statement

Umberto Ecco argued that,”….Beauty has never been absolute and immutable but has taken on different aspects depending on the historical period and the country….” Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. When first encountering the theme in it’s literal meaning—the perception of beauty is clearly subjective. It always has been, and probably always will be. People’s taste is influenced by fear and desire, of how they want to belong—or not be associated with. What is a nightmare to some is the heavenly dream to others.

Through garment and accessory the collection of objects gathered here for this exhibition are an amazing cross section of personal interpretation. From sophisticated couture and hand crafted assemblages’ all respond to the question of beauty. Brilliantly colored silks and crotchet yarns, glass, leather and wood, paper, broken tea cups and light, using the body as the focal point, being worn, adorned, or handled by. All artists were engaged in some challenge to identify beauty in their own language and to create a piece that is worn or observed as a piece of art. The results are both serious and whimsical.

We are the ancestors of multiple futures and what we discover and leave behind is only a pause in time of our interpretations of a culture pausing to think about beauty.
